Luncheon - Kai & Korero

Boil up is a traditional staple Māori kai (food) from Aotearoa NZ. It developed with the introduction of the cast iron pot in the 1850’s. Traditionally boil up is a broth/soup (waikohua) made from balanced combinations of meats, pork, or brisket with greens such as puha, watercress, or cabbage and kumara or potatoes boiled together, along with flour dumplings known as “doughboys” or motumotu, small island floats.

We have created a unique way of serving our boil up, by incorporating it in a bun and have called it a “mana bun”. It is essentially a boil up inside fried bread. and served with kamokamo chutney or kawakawa jelly.  Kai & Korero, offers a relaxed atmosphere where we talk about our culture, our families, and our lives as tribal people. We share our stories with you - of living and growing up in the bush (Urewera) with no power or running water, growing up on the marae, fishing or gathering food from our lake, rivers and the surrounding region.  We can korero (talk) about our customs today or any other topics of interest for you.

We meet at the gate for a traditional whakatau (greeting) and then introduce you to our Rongoa garden (maori healing plants) before lunch.
